Ambrotype of Enslaved Boy and Master's Infant Son,
probably Norfolk, Virginia, dated 1857.
Ambrotype in separated velvet and leather case with note in iron gall ink inscribed, "1857 / Richard Runnels Jones / son of / W. Ann and Wm Rodney Jones / and / Frank Henley son of / our slave and (Mammy) / Maria Henly and Wm Henly / latter was free", sealed together in 21st-century lined shadowbox, (frame separated), 25cm wide, 2cm deep, 20cm high (10in wide, 1in deep, 8in high).

Note
Frank William Henley was born in Norfolk, Virginia, around 1844. By 1880, he lived with his parents, Maria and William, in Newark, New Jersey, where both men worked as shoemakers, according to the U.S. Census. He died there in 1881. Richard Runnels Jones was born and died in Norfolk, Virginia, 1856-1871.
