Chippendale Red-painted Birch Slant-lid Desk,
probably Massachusetts, late 18th century.
Dovetailed case with nailed hand-planed backboards, lid opens on square hinges to a three-tiered interior with open valanced compartments and nine dovetailed drawers with brass knobs and one with a fan-carved front, flanked by two narrow drawers with split baluster molding applied to fronts, all over four thumb-molded and dovetailed graduated drawers on shaped bracket base, old painted and stained surface, two small drawers inscribed "1837" in pencil and all incised with numbers on back panel, (drawer repairs, wood knobs replace brasses), open, 91cm wide, 78cm deep, 101cm high (36 3/4in wide, 31 1/2in deep, 40 5/8in high).

Newspaper clipping dated 8/2013 reports, "a Massachusetts Chippendale birch slant lid desk brought $9,600 from a collector who said she had waited [33] years to buy it--she had missed out when Skinner sold the first time around and was determined to have it." Inscribed "33 yrs. 1980" in ink.
