Miniature Painted Dome-top Box,
New England, dated 1837.
Nailed and dovetailed dome lid opens on square iron hinges over dovetailed white pine case, bottom attached with wrought nails, painted on all sides with yellow and brown ground with panels outlined in yellow, red, and green, inscription on bottom transcribed on card as, "March 20 / 1837 / Lydia B. Lang 82 years / W.S. Hurd 77 years / Mar. 21." and inscribed on bottom interior, "Made by / Harriet Hurd Cotton's uncle / Willis Hurd, died Libby Prison / Civil War. / (Samuel Hurd's brother)" in blue ink, (old break on rear corner), 15cm wide, 7cm deep, 7cm high (6 3/4in wide, 3 7/8in deep, 3 3/4in high).
