Footnotes

Paolina Bonaparte was the most popular and eligible of Napoleon's siblings. Her first husband, a high officer of the revolution died just a few months after their marriage. Paolina then married Prince Camillo Borghese, who commissioned the sculpture of his new wife. This portrait, executed between 1804 and 1808, was modeled by Canova to evoke The Venus Victrix. In this story of the Judgment of Paris, Paris settles a dispute between Juno, Minerva and Venus by bestowing a golden apple on the victor,
