A rare Arts and Crafts silver and enamel box

not assayed, John Ferguson Gow, circa 1913
Hand crafted rectangular form with pillared supports to each corner, hinged cover and sides with enamelled panels, the cover cloisonné enamelled with trailing foliage and varying small flower heads issuing from a central flower head, enamelled in shades of blues and greens, also with a butterfly to the lower corner enamelled in vibrant orange, all over a cream coloured enamelled ground with small flecks of yellow/golds, the four side panels similarly enamelled with blue enamelled flowers and beads over a white enamelled ground edged with pale blue, each of the pillared supports with applied upright rectangular panels, centred with a cluster of small cloisonné circles enamelled in blues within a green ground, the surface of the silver has a light stippled ground, the hinged cover has a hinged hasp and locking pin, with material lined interior, the underside of the base hand engraved with an inscription
'JFG Builded me To M. Moss Given I was 28 vii 1913', height 5.7cm, length 9.8cm, weight total 10.2oz.

Footnotes

This box was a personal gift hand crafted by John Ferguson Gow to his future wife Mabel Moss. They married on 6th August 1916.
