A set of four George III silver sauce tureens and covers

maker's mark I.T probably for James Turner, London 1806
Oblong form with gadroon rims, the sides with plain moulded girdle and either side an applied lion mask and hinged drop handle, on a broad moulded foot, the lift-off covers with screw fitted ribbed loop handles (unmarked), engraved shield armorial to the bases and the covers crested with a hawk closed proper (Bell), length 17cm, weight 93.5oz. (4)

These are the arms and crest of Mathew BELL (1768-1811) of Newcastle-upon-Tyne and his wife Marianne BARBER (1777- ) daughter of John BARBER (born 1748) of Renfrewshire, Scotland by Margaret SEMPLE (born 1751). They were married in 1790 at Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Mathew BELL was the son of Mathew BELL (1746-1782) by Dulcibella EDEN (1746-1778). The family origin was at Woolsington, Northumberland.
