Henry TEMPLE (1739-1802) 2nd Viscount Palmerston, in the Peerage of Ireland and his first wife Frances POOLE (1730-1769), daughter of Francis POOLE (1682-1763) 2nd Baronet of Poole, Cheshire by Francis PELHAM (1691-1760).
They married in 1767 the assay year of this piece.

Henry TEMPLE was the son and heir of Henry TEMPLE (1673-1757) 1st Viscount Palmerston, created 1723, by Jane BARNARD (1715-1789) daughter of Sir John BARNARD lord Mayor of London. The many eminent branches of the TEMPLE family are descendants of Peter TEMPLE of Dorset.
A British politician he was the MP for East Looe (1762-1768), Hastings (1774-1784), Boroughbridge (1784-1790), Newport Isle of Wight (1790-1796), Winchester (1796-1802). He was later Lord Commissioner of the Admiralty and Lord of Treasury. He lived in Westminster, owning a house in Hanover Square despite inheriting the family estate in co. Sligo. In the time that he was MP for Looe he had embarked on an extensive tour of Europe, primarily aimed at collecting art for his own collections. His first marriage lasted only two years, after his first wife's death in 1769. He married in 1783 for a second time Mary MEE (1752-1805) of London.
He died on 17 April 1802 at his house in Hanover Square, Westminster, and was buried at Romsey Abbey with a monument by John Flaxman.
His son, Henry John Temple (1784-1865), 3rd Viscount Palmerston, was twice Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.
