A matched pair of George III silver open sauce tureens

Elizabeth Godfrey, London 1761 and the other and John Carter, London1773
Oval form with flared shaped gadroon rim, with scroll handles either side, both sides with engraved crest of a Saracen's head below an Earls coronet, spreading oval bases with gadroon band, length handle to handle 20.5cm and 21cm, weight 29.9oz.

The most probable owner of the arm are for Willoughby BERTIE (1740-1799) 4th Earl Abingdon of Rycote, Oxfordshire. Styled Lord Norreys from 1745 to 1760, he was an English peer and music patron.
He was the second son and eventual heir of Willoughby BERTIE (1692-1760) 3rd Earl Abingdon by Anna Maria COLLINS (died 1794) daughter of Sir John COLLINS. On 29 January 1759, he matriculated at Magdalen College, Oxford and received his MA on 29 May 1761. In 1768 he married Charlotte WARREN (died 1794) daughter of Admiral Sir Peter WARREN.
He was noted as a musical composer and is credited with the composition of one hundred and twenty musical works, also a racehorse owner Bertie bred the famous racehorse Potoooooooo, considered one of the finest racehorses of the 18th century. His extravagant spending placed great strains on the family's finances. He died, bankrupt, in 1799.
