A George III silver sauceboat

maker's mark rubbed, London 1776
Oval bellied form with gadroon rim, engraved armorial to one side for Joseph SYKES (1723-1805), leaf-capped flying scroll handle, on a part fluted shaped-oval foot with gadroon rim, length 18.2cm, weight 14.3oz.

These are the arms and crest of Joseph SYKES (1723-1805) iron merchant of Kingston upon Hull who later settled at Ela near Kingston upon Hull, The son of Richard SYKES (1678-1726) of Kingston upon Hull by his second wife Martha DONKIN (died 1726).
He married in 1754 Martha Dorothy TWIGGE (1718-1796) of Holme Hall Bakewell Derbyshire. The SYKES family settled in Hull in the late sixteenth century but originate from Dyke near Carlisle in Cumberland.
