A set of four George IV silver open salts

John Bridge, London 1829
Each oval form with flaring shell, oak leaf and acorn embellished gadrooned rim, interiors gilt with engraved crest of the ELPHINSTON family of Stirling, the lower body with a band of scrolls and anthemions over a stippled ground, raised on four wing-capped scrolling paw feet, length 13cm, weight 34.5oz. (4)

The family held an ancient Scottish Lordship and in the period 1823-1830 the holder was John ELPHINSTONE (1807-1860) 13th Lord Elphinstone of Elphinstone, later 1st Baron Elphinstone, GCB, GCH, PC. He was first a soldier and later a politician being the elected Scottish representative at the English parliament.
