A William IV silver coffee biggin

Paul Storr, London 1829
The baluster form pot on a shaped-circular stand with burner, the lower body chased with alternating panels of acanthus scrolls and diaper panels between curving flutes over a matted ground, with engraved armorial above and crest on the opposite side for George GRANT-SUTTIE (1797-1878) and his wife Harriett WEMYSS-CHARTERIS (1808-1858) who married in 1829, with a naturalistic branch handle embellished with leaves and flowers, bifurcated upper junction and with ivory insulators, hinged cover (lacking fixing pin), the shaped-circular base with similarly decorated alternating flutes with armorial and crest, pierced anthemions with scrolls and dots, centred with a removable burner, also crested, height on stand 30.5cm, weight 42.6oz.

These are the quartered and impaled arms of George GRANT-SUTTIE (1797-1878) later 5th Baronet Suttie of Balgone and Prestongrange co. Haddington and his wife Harriett WEMYSS-CHARTERIS (1808-1858). They married in 1829 the assay date of this piece.
She was daughter of Francis WEMYSS-CHARTERIS (1723-1808) 7th Earl of Wemyss by Lady Louisa BINGHAM (died 1882) daughter of Richard LUCAN (1764-1839) 2nd Earl Lucan.
George GRANT-SUTTIE was the only son of Sir James SUTTIE (1759-1836) 4th Baronet by Katherine Isabell HAMILTON.
