The twin crests together represent the CURZON-HOWE family who in 1821 were newly created Earls.

The later engraving was created for Richard William Penn CURZON-HOWE (1796-1870) in 1821 newly created 1st Earl Howe. He was the third but eldest surviving son of Penn Assheton CURZON (1757-1797), son of the 1st Viscount CURZON (1730-1820), by Baroness Sophia HOWE (1762-1835) co-heir and eldest daughter of Richard HOWE (1726-1799) 1st Earl Howe. In 1820 he married Lady Harriet Georgiana BRUDENELL (1799-1836) daughter of Robert BRUDENELL (1760-1837) 6th Earl of Cardigan.
