An Indian silver bowl with hunting scenes

Lucknow circa 1900, peacock in full display to underside
Deep circular in form, a polished upper rim with floral and foliate band beneath, the main body embossed in high and low relief with various hunting scenes, all divided by different species of tree, featuring a tiger, lion, bear, snake and monkey all pursued by traditionally dressed hunters with spears, some on horseback and other villagers, set against a stippled ground, a coriander-leaf border to the lower body, a peacock in full display to the base, height 18cm, diameter 24cm, weight 36oz.

Footnotes

This large silver bowl compares closely to other examples of the Lucknow 'hunting pattern' published in Wilkinson, Indian silver, 1858-1947, London, 1999, p. 136. It also bears a hallmark normally found on Burmese silver (see ibid., p. 41, no. 42-44), suggesting production by a Burmese silversmith working in a Lucknow studio.
