A late 18th century Russian silver-gilt and niello snuff box

maker's mark Ivan Zhilin, assay master Alexei Torlov, Veliky Ustyug 1798
Shaped rectangular form, the whole in silver-gilt, a hinged cover chased with nielloed decoration featuring a harbourside scene within an oval cartouche, opening to reveal a gilded interior, the exterior traditionally decorated with repeating star like motifs to all sides, bright-cut wriggle-work borders, to the base a Cyrillic monogram within an oval cartouche, length 9cm, weight 4.5oz.
