Alfred Desire Landon (French, 1851-1898): A patinated bronze figure of L'Orage

the seated classical maiden clad in windswept drapery, clutching her hair, on naturalistic base and integral tapering square plinth, signed LANSON, the front with applied presentation plaque inscribed L'ORAGE PAR LANSON GRAND PRIX, EXPON DES BEAUX ARTS PARIS, the side with bronze guarantee pastille, 70.5cm high

A pupil of the Ecole des Beaux Arts, Paris and the artists Rouillard, Jouffroy and A. Millet, Landon exhibited in the Paris Salon from 1870 until his death. His talent was recognised in his own time, with a third class medal in 1876, a second class medal in 1879 and a first class medal in 1880. Lanson was also made Chevalier de la Légion d'honneur in 1882. With his sculpture L'orage, he was awarded a Grand Prix at the Exposition des Beaux Arts in Paris.
