The present lot depicts the steam locomotive Duchess of Hamilton, which was built by LMS Crewe Works and designed by William Arthur Stanier. The train operated between September 1938 and February 1964. Cuneo depicts the locomotive with its British Railways number 46229, after both its renumbering on 15th April 1948, and its return to a maroon livery in September 1958. Executed in 1978, the present lot was painted just two years before Duchess of Hamilton first ran as the National Railway Museum's flagship locomotive. It remained operational until 1989, before becoming a static exhibit at the Museum.
