A RARE ZITAN RUYI SCEPTRE

18th century
The terminal naturalistically carved in openwork depicting two ripe peaches and peach blossoms borne on gnarled branches extending to the curved shaft modelled in high relief with intertwined leafy stems issuing further peaches and blossoms, the wood of dark-chocolate tone. 32cm (12 5/8in) long.

The present ruyi sceptre is exquisitely carved in openwork utilising the prized zitan wood. Compare with a similar zitan ruyi sceptre, Yongzheng/Qianlong, in the Palace Museum, Beijing, illustrated in China: The Three Emperors 1662-1795, London, 2005, no.273.
