Ames Manufacturing Company, Chicopee Massachusetts, mid-19th century

Brass hilt with openwork "US" and scrolling foliate counter-guard, decorated pommel, ray skin covered grip with twisted brass wire wrapping; slightly curved single-edge blade with false edge at the tip, one very narrow and one wide fuller, etched foliate, spread wing eagle, and "US" decoration, marked "Ames Mfg. Co./Chicopee/Mass" near the hilt, reproduction sword knot; black-painted scabbard with brass mounts, the back of the throat marked "AMES MFGN CO/CHICOPEE/MASS"; brown leather sword belt with eagle belt plate.
Blade lg. 30 7/8, overall lg. 36 5/8 in.
