Lucien Pissarro visited the village of Youlgreave, near Bakewell, Derbyshire from July to September 1928. The artist produced several works during this period, including a smaller variation on the current view titled Bankside, Coldwell End, Youlgreave (sold in these rooms on 18th November 2009 for £32,400). Pissarro had to contend with the unpredictability of the Peak District weather whilst painting en plein air, observing the challenges of completing a canvas from beginning to end without a break in England. The present work contains numerous closely observed houses, which the artist commented always took longer with the requirement to produce preliminary drawings in charcoal
