Footnotes

"I thought since we began with you we should mark this day by letting you be the first to hear what will be, not the last but perhaps the penultimate Smiths single in its present incarnation"
- Geoff Travis to John Peel, 1987

As one of the earliest proponents of the Smiths, John Peel was personally informed by Geoff Travis (founder of Rough Trade) of the impending departure of Johnny Marr. The handwritten letter reveals the label's shock and disappointment at the decision and the implications for the band, with Travis hoping for "a reconciliation, if not then to a stunning future for both Morrissey & Johnny".
