The Smiths: A Test Pressing Of The Debut Single Hand In Glove/Handsome Devil,

1979,
Rough Trade RT 131, a double-sided 7inch disc, white labels with recording details in blue ink/black felt pen and catalogue number in red ballpoint, in plain die-cut sleeve with John Peel's handwritten track timing and band name in black felt-tip pen

Footnotes

"Those are the Smiths, and they've had one or two rather extravagant write-ups in the musical papers, and the people at Rough Trade see them as being the next big thing as well"
- John Peel, John Peel's Music On BFBS, 1 May 1983

John Peel first played 'Hand In Glove' on German radio, modestly describing the track as "perfectly adequate, that, as a debut single". After further plays on BFBS and on The John Peel Show, the single featured in the top ten of that year's Festive Fifty.
