For those insufficiently wealthy to afford its hyper-expensive race-bred sports car - the 300 SL - Mercedes-Benz offered the less exotic but no less refined 190 SL. Announced in 1954 and based on the 180 saloon whose all-independently-suspended running gear it used, the 190 SL did not enter production until January 1955, the delay being caused by alterations aimed at strengthening the saloon's shortened platform to compensate for the open body's reduced stiffness.

Mounted on a detachable subframe along with the four-speed manual gearbox, front suspension and steering, the power unit was a 1,897cc overhead-camshaft four - the first such engine ever to feature in a Mercedes-Benz. Breathing through twin Solex downdraft carburettors, the M121 unit produced 105bhp at 5,700rpm, an output sufficient to propel the 190SL to 100km/h in 13 seconds and on to a top speed of 170 km/h. The fact that the 190's ride was more boulevard than sporting, and that many contemporary sports cars could out-perform it while costing a good deal less, did nothing to deter sales. The model was a big hit in the USA, where many of the slightly fewer than 26,000 produced between 1955 and 1963 found homes.

Although ordered with US equipment, this 190 SL Roadster seems to have been delivered new to Salzburg in Austria where the first service was carried out in December 1962 at 266 miles (the odometer being in miles from new it is believed). The car subsequently moved to Paris where it was serviced in February 1963 at 1,726 miles; then in Nice in May 1963 at 5,497 miles. It appears that the Mercedes moved to the USA shortly thereafter, a service being recorded at 13,354 miles in San Francisco in 1964 and the next one at 18,815 miles in July '64 in California. Numerous invoices are on file relating to its time in the USA.

In 1991 the 190 SL came back to Europe and went to Italy where it has resided ever since. Bought by the current owner, the Mercedes has been extensively restored professionally and has scarcely been used since its restoration. This car has the following factory options:

Pour ceux qui n'avaient pas les moyens de s'offrir le plus onéreux pur-sang sportif – la 300 SL - Mercedes-Benz proposait la moins exotique, mais tout aussi raffinée 190 SL. Dévoilée en 1954 et prenant pour base la berline 180 dont elle reprenait le train roulant à suspension indépendante, la 190 SL n'entra en production qu'en janvier 1955, ce contretemps ayant été nécessaire pour apporter des remèdes au manque de rigidité de la plate-forme raccourcie de la berline, due à l'absence de toit.

Monté sur une structure détachable avec la boîte manuelle à quatre rapports, les suspensions avant et la direction, le moteur était un quatre cylindres à arbre à cames en tête de 1 897 cm3 – le premier moteur à proposer cette caractéristique sur une Mercedes-Benz. Alimenté par deux carburateurs Solex inversés, le moteur M121 développait 105 ch à 5 700 tr/min, une puissance suffisante pour propulser la 190 SL de 0 à 100 km/h en 14 secondes et à une vitesse maximale de 171 km/h.
