First introduced in 1971/72, the luxurious 450 SL roadster and 450 SLC coupé were outwardly identical to their '350' (3.5-litre) sister models, though endowed with superior performance courtesy of a more-powerful 4.5-litre V8 engine. Built on a longer wheelbase, the coupé accommodated two rear seat passengers and provided greater boot space than the roadster. Mercedes-Benz's increasing preoccupation with safety was evident in the design of the interior, which boasted a padded dash top, recessed or flexibly mounted switch gear, and padded steering wheel on a 'collapsible' column. Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection was standardised for 1975, electronic ignition and self-adjusting hydraulic tappets being introduced at the same time. Maximum speed of this superbly equipped top-of-the-range coupé was around 215km/h.

What sets this 450 SLC 5.0 apart from the standard is its fantastic history. This particular Mercedes was delivered new to one of the greatest soccer players known worldwide, Mr. Diego Armando Maradona. The car was a gift to Maradona from his first major soccer club/fan club in Argentina, the Boca Juniors/Argentinos Juniors. To make things even more extraordinary, this car was presented to Maradona by none other than Juan Manuel Fangio. The only official Mercedes-Benz dealership in Argentina at the time was owned by Fangio, considered to be the greatest racing driver of all time. In Maradona's autobiography, "Yo Soy el Diego", he states that it was around the same time receiving this Mercedes, which was the pinnacle of when his life and popularity changed for the better. In his book he states his old Fiat 125 was in his past, and he was already driving in a Mercedes-Benz, a very huge change for him.

This C107 450 SLC was built to European specification and was originally exported to Argentina. Not only did this vehicle have an iconic first owner, but this special Mercedes is also one of only 1,636 examples that was fitted with the more powerful, all-aluminum 5.0-litre engine with 240hp, one of just 816 built for that year. This lightweight example came equipped with many additional features consisting of aluminum alloy body panels including bonnet and boot lid to help trim the weight down. Other notable features include the special front chin spoiler and rear spoiler. The reasoning behind all the performance-oriented features was in order to help Mercedes homologate the SLC model for competition in the World Rally Championship of 1978. Finished in red with black leather interior, the car is equipped with automatic transmission, fog lights, electric windows, air conditioning and an electric sliding steel sunroof. With circa 61,445 kilometres covered from new, this very well looked after car is presented in stunning condition. Such is the quality of these cars that if looked after well, they do preserve exceptionally as evidenced by this very fine example. A recent cosmetic restoration performed by the previous owner was completed in high quality. The car is in great mechanical condition and does come included with many additional items. The car will be accompanied by the original title which shows Maradona's name as well as the original date of sale, documentation from the Argentinian motor vehicle offices showing the chain of ownership history and stating Maradona as the first owner. Other transcripts included is a photograph of a young Maradona standing next to the Mercedes, as well as some additional collectibles and documents.

Featuring timeless colors and dependable mechanical underpinnings, this low-mile and exquisite model must be among the best-preserved examples of the 450 SLC. Having been driven by "El Pibe de Oro" (The Golden Boy) himself as well as being associated with Juan Manuel Fangio handing over the keys to Maradona, the historical value of this Mercedes is truly granted. As Argentina celebrates its most recent 2022 World Cup victory, here lies a chance to own this wonderful marvel of mechanical history. Surely a wonderful opportunity to operate the steering wheel that was once used by the "Hand of God" from this Argentinian soccer legend.

Présentés en 1971/72, les luxueux cabriolet 450 SL et coupé 450 SLC étaient extérieurement identiques à leurs frères 350 de 3,5 litres, mais leur V8 de 4,5 litres, plus puissant, leur assurait des performances supérieures. Le coupé, d'un empattement plus important, offrait deux sièges arrière et un coffre plus grand que celui du cabriolet. Leur intérieur reflétait clairement l'implication croissante de Mercedes dans la sécurité ; il se caractérisait par une planche de bord matelassée, des interrupteurs encastrés ou escamotables et un volant rembourré monté sur une colonne de direction rétractable. L'injection Bosch K-Jetronic fut généralisée en 1975, de même que l'allumage électronique et les poussoirs hydrauliques. Cette C107 450 SLC, construite en définition Europe, a dès son origine été exportée en Argentine. Elle a non seulement eu pour premier propriétaire une figure légendaire, mais elle fait aussi partie des seulement 1 636 exemplaires qui ont été équipés d'un moteur plus puissant, le 5,0 litres tout aluminium de 240 ch.
