Footnotes

Here BONHAMS has great pleasure in presenting to the market the 1991 Formula 1 car in which legendary seven-times Formula 1 World Champion Driver Michael Schumacher actually posted the very first of his long career's sensational performances, during the very first practice session preceding his pinnacle-class racing debut, in the Belgian Grand Prix of 1991.

This Jordan-Ford 191 is the actual chassis in which the charismatic young German newcomer staggered all onlookers by immediately clocking eighth fastest practice time during the initial 'FP1' session in practice for that race at Spa-Francorchamps. The car – which is offered here in runnable condition following appropriate inspection and preparation – had been taken to the Belgian circuit as team spare. It is accompanied here by an extensive documentation file, including a copy letter (dated as recently as January 25, 2021) from contemporary Team 7UP Jordan team engineer Trevor Foster recalling how: "Following a brief shakedown at Silverstone South Circuit...chassis 05 was...transported directly to Spa. I was Michael Schumacher's race engineer on his debut...During the early part of FP1 (first practice, first session) Michael had immediately gone faster than Andrea (de Cesaris, his national team leader), as a result Andrea requested to switch to the T car (04). Shortly after the switch Michael's race car had developed a small water leak from the water pump which required the engine to be removed. Andrea seemed happy to stay in the spare car so we switched Michael into Andrea's race car (06) for the remainder of FP1, finishing the session 8th overall and faster than Andrea...".

And, in final official qualifying, Michael achieved a lap time in his reassembled race car – chassis 05 – which was still 0.774secs faster than the senior man. So here we offer Jordan-Ford chassis serial '191/6' in which the great Schumacher made his initial impact upon the Grand Prix racing world on the opening day of that race meeting at Spa-Francorchamps on August 23, 1991.While McLaren-Honda dominated qualifying with Ayrton Senna on pole position and team-mate Alain Prost second, behind them in that startling seventh place on the starting grid was Michael Schumacher, by that time back in his originally assigned car, chassis '191/5'. Unfortunately, the young newcomer's overnight celebrity received a salutary humility lesson as – unaccustomed to a racing standing-start with full fuel load, he burned out the clutch and retired before the second corner on the opening lap.

But as Trevor Foster has recounted "That weekend at Spa was memorable for a number of reasons including Michael's debut, coming agonisingly close to Jordan's first podium in our first season of Formula 1 and proved that our small team could take on the established manufacturers, laying the foundations for the future success of the time".

Jordan-Ford 191 designer and the Jordan team's chief engineer, Gary Anderson, remarked after that remarkable debut performance: "The thing that impresses me is that he hasn't even worked up a sweat!".

Meanwhile Andrea de Cesaris, back in his race car – chassis '191/6' offered here – completed the first of that Belgian GP's 44 race laps in eighth place and moved into seventh on lap 3. By lap 18 he was up into fifth place, only to be displaced by Nelson Piquet's similarly Ford HB-engined Benetton, then Riccardo Patrese's Williams-Renault – while Jean Alesi's Ferrari was leading from Ayrton Senna's McLaren-Honda. Here was the novitiate Jordan team, with this car, really mixing it with "the big boys".

Alesi's fine Ferrari drive then ended abruptly at the start of lap 31 when the car's V12 engine failed. Piquet's second set of Pirelli tyres on the Benetton were losing grip, and on lap 31 l Cesaris moved into second place behind Senna. The experienced Italian – together with the entire Jordan team - began to hope for a maiden victory as de Cesaris closed to within three seconds of Senna's McLaren. But he had already warned his pit that his car's engine temperatures were running high. They radioed him to ignore the warnings and press as hard as possible, but sadly – with just two laps to run (less than ten miles) – the Cosworth-Ford HB engine cried enough and Andrea rolled to a silent halt out on the circuit.
Senna that day was – for once - a lucky winner.

The impact which Michael Schumacher, as a new young driver sensation, had upon the Formula 1 scene was in fact matched by that of Eddie Jordan's new team itself. As the respected 'Autocourse' annual's review at the end of the season put it: "Rarely has a new arrival made such an impact. In the space of six months Team 7UP Jordan exploded several myths about the impenetrable nature of Formula 1 and, along the way, exposed one or two of the established teams as half-hearted, shambling amateurs. Considering Eddie Jordan's loquacious tendencies, it is fitting that his team should have been the talk of the paddock.

"When Jordan announced his intention to step up from Formula 3000 into the major league, it was felt that the Irishman was finally about to receive his comeuppance. The first warning sign to the contrary came with the deal to run the Ford-Cosworth HB engine. Then, when the neat and economical Jordan-Ford 191 was revealed, Gary Anderson's credentials as designer gathered a strength which many had believed beyond the capability of a former mechanic.

"That was followed by another coup; the successful negotiation of sponsorship with Pepsi Co, a deal which left one or two extravagant members of the Old Guard – having pitched for the contract in their usual lavish manner – spluttering with indignation. By lowering the bid, Jordan was, in fact, raising the stakes and breaking through the comfort zones enjoyed and squandered in the past. For goodness' sake, didn't this man understand Formula 1?"

In fact Eddie Jordan's gamble – and his faith in his own team's personnel – really paid off in spades. His assigned drivers at the beginning of 1991 were the experienced (and well-funded) Italian Andrea de Cesaris and Belgian rising hope Bertrand Gachot. As a newcomer into what was at the time jam-packed Formula 1 – with no fewer than eighteen teams in contention that season – Jordan would have to pre-qualify for every race.

Their debut had been indifferent in Phoenix, Arizona, when de Cesaris missed a gear, damaged his engine and failed to pre-qualify. But from that point forward he and the young new team never looked back. Designer Gary Anderson had expected his new cars to qualify 15th or 17th, in the lower area of mid-grid. By the second Grand Prix of the season they took 10th and 13th on the starting grid. In the Canadian Grand Prix de Cesaris and Gachot finished fourth and fifth to give an emotional Eddie Jordan his first Formula 1 World Championship points.

But the rather excitable Belgian driver Gachot was struck mid-season by a court case in London which saw him convicted of having used CS gas supposedly to defend himself in a traffic incident, resulting in an 18-month prison sentence.

This triggered Eddie Jordan's quest for a replacement driver for the next race in Belgium, and he selected the young German Mercedes-Benz endurance racing star, Michael Schumacher for that opportunity. It rapidly became apparent that this was one of the most fortuitous moments in Jordan's career. Schumacher created instant sensation, as one report put it "...a complete natural who immediately made himself at home by taking seventh place on the grid at a circuit (Spa-Francorchamps, home of the Belgian GP) he had never seen before. His race was short-lived, due to clutch trouble but Jordan had a winner on his hands.

"Not for long. By the time the teams rolled into Monza a fortnight later....Jordan, the arch wheeler-dealer, discovered he had been out-manoeuvred as Schumacher's advisors offered the 22-year-old German to Benetton-Ford. Benetton did not need to be asked twice...". And in 1994 Schumacher would win the first of his record seven Drivers' World Championship titles – while characteristically "hardly working up a sweat"...

This Jordan-Ford 191's full racing record for the 1991 World Championship season has been recorded as follows:

August 11, 1991 – Hungarian GP, Hungaroring – Andrea de Cesaris – q.17th – 7th
August 25, 1991 – Belgian GP, Spa-Francorchamps – Andrea de Cesaris – q.11th – DNF
September 8, 1991 – Italian GP, Monza – spare car for Andrea de Cesaris/Roberto Moreno
September 22, 1991 – Portuguese GP, Estoril – spare car for de Cesaris/Moreno
September 29, 1991 – Spanish GP, Barcelona – spare car for de Cesaris/Alessandro Zanardi (practised by him)
October 20, 1991 – Japanese GP, Suzuka – spare car for de Cesaris/Zanardi
November 3, 1991 – Australian GP, Adelaide – spare car for de Cesaris/Alessandro Zanardi (practised by him)

Following this use in the 1991 Formula 1 World Championship, Jordan-Ford '191-6' was sold to veteran Belgian endurance-racing driver and collector Jean 'Beurlys' Blaton, in whose collection it was preserved until 2005. It was then purchased by Didier Siruge who occasionally raced it in the Boss F1 Series and who also appeared with the car at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. This historic 1990s Formula 1 projectile has survived in operating condition to this day, and the V6-cylinder c. 650bhp Ford HB engine is still rebuilt by Langford Performance Engineering – the same company which rebuilt the engines back in 1991. After a spell in the private Campion Collection the car passed to its present vendor in 2020. The car has been in action as recently as July 2021 when it was featured in SkyF1's coverage of the 30 year anniversary since Michael's debut, and as part of this was driven at Silverstone by Mick Schumacher making it one of a handful of racing cars driven by two Schumachers.
Plainly, this Jordan-Ford 191 is a runnable evocation not only of seven-times World Champion Michael Schumacher's Formula 1 debut, but also to Andrea de Cesaris's outstanding drive in that 1991 Belgian GP and to that so unexpectedly successful debut season of Team 7UP Jordan.

Oh, and not least, in 2018 it achieved another accolade, being declared the Best Looking F1 Car of All Time by 'The Daily Telegraph', (UK). We recommend this fine Formula 1 car as being worthy of the closest consideration.
