Footnotes

Chassis '110105' is the most famous of the 36 T26 Grand Sports: it has extensive in-period racing history, including five consecutive Le Mans entries from 1949 to 1953. According to Pierre Abeillon, this car thus holds the record as the two-seater Talbot with the most Le Mans starts.
According to the factory build sheet, '110105' was sold to André Chambas as a bare chassis and delivered on 16th October 1948. The actual invoice was issued on 2nd October 1948 by Dumond Frères, a Simca, Talbot and Hispano-Suiza dealer at 7 Rue Duhamel in Lyon. The car's original French registration was '497 HK 9'. Chambas was one of Dumond's regular customers, having previously bought more than 10 Talbots from the dealer. The price for the chassis, including five wheels, tyres, tools and a 2.04% tax was 1,528,049 old Francs. Although it would have bought three Citroën Light Fifteens, this was actually not a bad price: a few months later the chassis price for a Grand Sport had passed the two million Francs mark. Add a Saoutchik body, and the customer would be looking at something in excess of four million Francs for a complete car.

Chambas, however, wanted to go racing and decided to design the body himself and have it built locally. He modelled a modern streamlined body in clay, and had it translated into a state-of-the-art lightweight all aluminium body designed to be easily removable from the chassis. The clay model still exists and is included in the sale.
Being intended for a lightweight racer, the Chambas body has no fixtures that are not completely functional. The roof drops away to a curtailed fastback rump: there is no boot, only a hatch providing to access the spare tyre, which is flanked by two quick-filler fuel caps on the rear wings.

From Vienne south of Lyon, André Chambas was in the shoe business before and during the war. In the late 1930s he had become friends with André Morel, who had been a racing driver for Talbot. It was Morel who suggested to Chambas that he order a short-chassis Talbot and go racing.

According to Pierre Abeillon in his book Talbot Lago de Course, Chambas then approached Contamin, a local coachbuilder whose main business was the manufacture of crane cabins. Segments were cut into the clay model that Chambas had made, and scald up using a pantograph. The actual body was built by Mr Jules Journet at Contamin or Besset in Annonay assisted by a young 'metal basher' named Arnaud Robert. Perhaps Jules Journet worked for both Besset and Contamin. But this is all supposition, as '110105' carries no coachbuilder's plate.

In a letter from general manager Mr Berthier, dated 4th March 1949, the Automobile-Club de L'Ouest extends its official invitation to André Chambas to participate in the 1949 Le Mans 24 Hours with his Talbot. More or less covertly, Anthony Lago supported Chambas' efforts. A factory mechanic was allocated for three months to prepare the car for the 1949 Le Mans race, for which special camshafts were manufactured. Lago is quoted as having said that "if he wins, it's good; if he loses, public opinion will attribute the defeat to Chambas".

In the 1949 and 1950 Le Mans 24 hours, Chambas and Morel raced '110105' with the Contamin/Besset body. In 1949, three Talbots were entered, none finished, and '110105' abandoned in the 24th hour having run out of fuel. A distance of 2,981.732 kilometres was covered at an average speed of 124.3km/h. In 1950, Talbot's famous winning year, three were again entered, placing 1st, 2nd and 13th, '110105' being the latter, covering 3,083.87 kilometres at an average speed of 128.5km/h.

In 1949, Chambas also entered the Rallye International d'Evian (number '2'), finishing 2nd, and the Rallye de l'Iseran (DNS). In 1950, '110105' was entered in the Rallye Lyon-Charbonnières (number '36') but was withdrawn. The car may also have participated in the 1950 Rallye de l'Iseran and the Rallye du Dauphine.

Perhaps feeling that the coupé body was too heavy and making the car uncompetitive, Chambas then commissioned Tunesi, a coachbuilder whose premises were no more than 200 metres away from his own house, to build an even lighter barquette body, again to his own design. Interestingly, today '110100' carries a replica of this lost Tunesi body.

In 1951, Chambas and Morel raced '110105' at Le Mans with its new barquette body, but the performance was disappointing. Out of six Talbots that ran that year, three were placed 2nd, 4th and 17th respectively, with '110105' the last of these three with 3,058 kilometres covered at a 127.4km/h average.

For the 1952 Le Mans race, Chambas decided to supercharge the engine. He replaced the three Zenith carburettors with two Rootes 140 SEI superchargers, driven by belt from the crankshaft. Each supercharger had its own Zenith carburettor. The compression ratio of the engine was reduced to 6:1 and the supercharger increased maximum power by around 20%. That year, with a total of four Talbots entered, '110105' was the highest placed French car and the only Talbot to finish, in 9th place with a distance of 3,155.29 kilometres and a 131.4km/h average.

In the 1953 race, still with the Tunesi body, and with new co-driver De Cortanze, Chambas suffered a minor accident at only 2 hours and 40 minutes into the race and spun the car 180 degrees. Judging that it was too dangerous to turn the car around, he drove 1.5 kilometres in reverse to a place where he could make the turn, unfortunately cooking the gearbox in the process. Forced to retire after only 323.808 kilometres and with a 148km/h average, this was his last race and the last time in period that the Chambas would appear at Le Mans. Four Talbots were entered and only one placed, finishing 8th.

In the 2003 Rétroviseur article, Bruno Chambas reminisces about the great outings to Le Mans: about 10 people would descend on the Hotel Piccolo located on the Hunaudières, including M Moireau, the mechanic who knew everything about the car; the two 'special envoys' from the factory, who were in charge of race preparation; the team's official timekeeper; the family gardener(!); André Chambas and his wife; Bruno Chambas, his brother; and, of course, André Morel. Over a period of days the pit was prepared with parts, fuel, etc just like a factory team. Bruno Chambas confirms that it was Morel who persuaded Chambas to participate in Le Mans and shared his knowledge and gave him valuable advice.

By the 1954 season André Chambas felt that '110105' was no longer competitive. He had the Tunesi body removed and the Contamin body remounted on the chassis and consigned the car to a dealer in Cannes where it stayed for nearly a year. Wanting to dispose of the car, Chambas then sold it to a garage in the city of Lyon called Rollin. In 1956 it was with Henri Malartre who retained it for some months. What happened to the Tunesi body is not known, although it is rumoured to have remained in storage for many years before being broken up.

'110105' then passed onto E Jurist and J Risch. In 1958 the car was acquired and exported to the USA by Vojta Mashek of Chicago, who also owned the Pennock coupé '110124'. After Mashek's death in 1973, the car was bought by Robert (Bob) Jubie of Burnsville Minnesota. In 1976 he was still listed as the owner in A. S. Carroll's Talbot Registry. In 1984 it was advertised for sale in the April/May/June issues of the UK classic car magazines and was purchased by Adrien de Ghellinck of Belgium. In 1985 or 1986, Ghellinck sold '110105' to Baron François d'Huart, who also owned '110106', '110115' and '110120'. d'Huart participated several times in the Mille Miglia Storica with '110105'.

In the spring of 2003, Christophe Pund of the Galerie des Damiers sold the Talbot on behalf of Baron d'Huart to Jose Fernandez in Spain, having exhibited it at Rétromobile. Mr Fernandez took the car to the Louis Vuitton Classic Concours d'Élégance in September 2003, but unfortunately the car did not win any prizes. Restoration work was carried on Mr Fernandez' behalf by Carrozzeria Nova Rinascente in Padova, Italy. In 2010, '110105' was documented in the Talbot-Lago reference book by historian Peter Larsen, who Bonhams thank for providing the source of some information contained in this description.
In a January 2010 letter, Mr Fernandez, owner of a Talbot GP car ('110059') with which he participated in the 2006 and 2008 Le Mans Classic, describes the Chambas: "I have not done any racing with the Chambas coupé, only driving it on the road in a normal way, but I would say the driving is similar to other pre-selective Wilson-type gearbox cars, and heavier handling than the 110059, because it weighs 1500 kg and has a higher centre of gravity. With the Chambas, on the other hand, you do not have the inconvenience of having to start the car when cold with a jack, as you have to do with the racer 110059, without a proper clutch. The car is very nice to drive."

In 2015, Lukas Hüni exhibited the Talbot on Fernandez' behalf at Rétromobile (when it was UK registered as 'YXG 936'). That same year '110105' was shown at the Goodwood Festival of Speed and the car won its class at the Chantilly Art et Élégance concours. Fernandez showed the car at Pebble Beach in 2017. The current owner bought the Talbot from Fernandez in December 2017 via Dutch dealer Jaap Braam-Ruben.
Representing the last glorious flowering of a great French marque, this five time Le Mans entrant, Talbot-Lago T26 Grand Sport comes with known provenance from new and is eligible for many of the most prestigious Historic motor sports events including, of course, the Le Mans Classic and Mille Miglia Storica not to mention the Le Mans centenary celebrations this year in the Sarthe.
