ASTAIRE WRITES TO GERTRUDE LAWRENCE DURING U.K. STAGE RUN OF GAY DIVORCEE.

ASTAIRE, FRED. 1899-1987. Autograph Letter Signed to "Gertie" mentioning a recent matinee performance, 1 p, 8vo, London, [1932-33], on "3, John Street, Mayfair" stationery, mild fading to ink, otherwise fine.

Astaire, starring at the time in the musical Gay Divorcee with dancer Claire Luce, writes to Gertrude Lawrence thanking her for sending flowers and commenting on his recent performance: "Regret that I could not have done a better performance for you Wed. matinee—Luce was ill and our darn table dance business almost ended disastrously." After Gay Divorcee closed, Astaire headed to Hollywood to star in a series of successful musicals, many co-starring Ginger Rogers.
