See Brigitte Tietzel (Literature above) for an interesting discussion of the large Vienna altar garniture figures and their relationship to the well-known Meissen garnitures by J.J. Kaendler. Another Vienna example of the Apostle Paul, mounted on a neo-classical socle, is part of an altar garniture including both Meissen and Vienna figures. The author concludes (p. 148) that this garniture is composed of elements of two different gifts: a Meissen garniture given to Pope Clemens XIV, and a Vienna garniture likely given by the Empress Maria Theresia to Pope Pius VI. The Vienna figures are dated to 1778-79 as the altar candlesticks in the garniture have Viennese silver mounted dated 1779. The bases of the Vienna figures have concave sides that differ from the present lot, however, and it is possible that this figure of the Apostle Paul is earlier in date. A different, slightly larger white Vienna figure of the Apostle Paul, dated 1744-49, is in the Museum für Angewandte Kunst, Vienna (inv. no. Ke 6584).
