Footnotes

The absence of red bole associated with the underpainting securing gilding on Doccia porcelain leads one to think this cup is likely a replacement of a Meissen piece produced by the Cozzi factory, the grey paste seems to confirm this. There are few examples of pieces of this kind made by the Cozzi factory. There is another example of a copy directly after the Meissen original in the Cavalli service, for which several pieces were reproduced by Cozzi as replacements or additions to that famous armorial service delivered to Venice in the 1740s. An example of a cup and saucer from this service is in the British Museum. Click this link for the Cozzi cup and saucer in the British Museum.
