One of the rarest models ever produced by Rolex, the reference 8171 is one of only two models they created which featured a triple calendar and moon phase, the other being the reference 6062. The present example is one of under 100 of the steel versions to have come to market of around 800 that were made. This watch, being offered for the first time, is remarkably well preserved and shows little sign of intervention. The silvered dial has taken on a gentle patination typical of its age and is one of the first versions that appeared on this model, know as a 'Super' dial. This reference was manufactured in a small series with unusually large dimensions for the period, 38mm diameter, this has contributed to the continuing popularity of this reference today. Its size has also led to its affectionate nickname by Italian collectors of 'Padellone' meaning 'frying pan'.
