Footnotes

Provenance
Capt. J. Rouch, French Military Attache to the Turkish Government.
Baron Guy de Rothschild (by repute)
Purchased by the present vendor in France at auction, circa 1992.

The related ephemera accompanying the offered lot, which comprises a small collection of letters, invitations and newspaper cuttings, includes the following:

A letter addressed to Monsieur le Capitaine de Vaisseau, Madame & Mademoiselle Rouch, Ambassade de France, En Ville.

A card reading Robert Eymery, Vice Consul de France, another with Barone de Giura, a further card with Nitcho Gueorguiev, and a final example with Anna N. Gheorghiev.

An invitation reading from Monsieur Madame Jean Lescuyer, another from Monsieur et Madame Carlo Galli, and a further one from Le Ministre de Turquie et Madame Rusen.

Additionally, there is a newspaper clipping which mentions a Mme Adrien Thierry, nee de Rothschild. Indeed, Nadine Charlotte Therese Jeanne Mathilde de Rothschild (1898-1958) accompanied her husband Adrien Thierry on his various ambassadorial postings for most of her adult life. These postings included Madrid, London, Athens and Bucharest. One could speculate that there may have been some crossover socially in the diplomatic circles that the Thierrys and Rouches undoubtedly moved. As such it is possible that the offered lot could have been a gift from Adrien Thierry and his wife to Captain Rouch and his wife.
