Footnotes

Provenance:
From the Collection of Dame Joan Collins

After several years of headlining the hit television show Dynasty, yet being paid far less than the leading male actor, John Forsythe, Dame Joan repeated her request for a pay rise, but was rejected.

In protest, Dame Joan refused to return for the next season. At a time when pay was rarely equal, this earned her, in the eyes of the producers and the press, an unfair reputation as a diva. Nevertheless, Dame Joan persevered with what she thought was just. She went to the South of France and consoled herself with the purchase of this bracelet. Before long, the producers begged her to return. She also succeeded in getting a pay rise. While her new salary did not equal that of her male co-star, Dame Joan spoke up at a time in Hollywood when gender pay gaps were not questioned and she has remained a vocal supporter of equal pay ever since.
