The present work dates to Schiele's studies at the Vienna Academy, when he was only 18 years old. Here Schiele was subject to the traditional drawing disciplines imposed by his tutor Christian Griepenkerl, which he only followed reluctantly, of course, favouring instead the more enticing modern style of Gustav Klimt and the Vienna Successionists. The present work is one of the earlier drawings by the artist and one in which we can clearly see the prodigious mastery of his handling, even at his early age. Porträt einer Dame displays a clear and confident understanding of the importance of line and composition, whilst the tender vantage point over his sleeping model is an early exploration of the intimacy for which his portraits are so widely known. The work also illustrates the influence his soon-to-be tutor, Gustav Klimt, had already had on him, particularly in the handling of the subject's hair, which folds and overlaps in a most Klimtian fashion.
