Footnotes

Depicted in the repousse is a story taken from Homer's Odyssey (8.266-366). The bard Demodocus tells the story of how Venus, the goddess of love, was married to the blacksmith god Vulcan but was in love with Mars, the god of War. Vulcan made a cobweb of fine chains which he strew across Venus and his bed. Mars and Venus got caught in the chains and Vulcan then invited the other gods to laugh at them.
