THE COMPETITION E-TYPES

Right from the moment deliveries commenced in 1961, the E-Type began to find its way on to the world's racetracks. In the Grand Touring class for production sports cars the E-Type proved competitive right from the start, Graham Hill celebrating the model's racing debut by winning at Oulton Park on 3rd April 1961 in Tommy Sopwith's car, 'ECD 400'.
The elevation of the GT class to Manufacturers' Championship status for 1963 prompted Jaguar to develop a small batch of very special lightweight cars to challenge Ferrari. The FIA's regulations for the Gran Turismo category stipulated that a minimum of 100 cars had to be built, but permitted coachwork modifications, thus enabling Jaguar to claim that its lightweights were standard E-types fitted with altered bodywork.
THE MOTORCAR OFFERED
According to a copy of the Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust Certificate, this racy Jag was manufactured on March 7, 1963 and supplied new to the home market as a right hand drive coupe, distributed by Henlys Limited of London to Imperial Motors in Cheltenham and sold new to L.C. Hawkins, Esq. of Swindon. The early history of the car is not recorded, but paperwork on file indicates the car was in Germany in 1986 with Frank Becker. Acquired from Mr. Becker in that year, the Jaguar was completely torn down and rebuilt as left-hand drive Semi-Lightweight Competition Roadster made to meet FIA Historic B, Period Improved/GT specifications for European sanctioned racing. During the work, the bodywork was modified and fitted with an aluminum hardtop, while the doors, hood, and truck lid were also replaced with aluminum skinned parts. The side windows, rear window, and even the headlight covers were replaced with lightweight Perspex. The heater and blower were removed, as was some of the interior trim. Numerous other period-correct performance upgrades were also made in line with those allowed by European sanctioning bodies. At some point, the original engine block was also replaced with a larger 4.2 liter unit and a later DOHC head.
Receiving its FIA Passport in 1989, the car would go on to run that year's Targa Florio Autostoriche and is understood to have run that event on at least one other occasion in addition to further high-profile European road racing events. During its Belgian ownership at this time, it was maintained by Cavallino Tuning with receipts on file describing the work completed. The E-Type made its way stateside in 2003 where it was uprated with a 5-speed transmission and ventilated disc brakes by marque specialist Doc's Jags of Scottsdale, Arizona.
Joining the present collection in 2012, it has been sparingly driven and not raced in the current ownership. Breathing through three, big 45DCOE Weber carburetors, a dyno chart on file from the early 1990s show the engine was putting out a massive 292bhp and 262 bl-ft of torque. Fitted with a VA Engineering roll cage, 4-point seatbelts, copies of receipts and records including its 1989 FIA Passport, and more, this swift cat is the perfect car for road or track. A model eligible for numerous race series and rally events, this Semi-Lightweight Roadster Recreation offers all the excitement of one of the 11 original example at a small fraction of the price.
