The 'Disco Volante' or 'Flying Saucer', as it was nicknamed by Italian collectors, was designed by Gérald Genta who, at the time, was working for Audemars Piguet on a freelance basis. The 1950s saw Audemars Piguet dive head first into ultra-thin watchmaking and numerous watch companies invested significant resources in engineering the thinnest watches possible. With the 'Disco Volante', Genta highlighted this by shifting the focus from the dial to the razor thin bezel, which itself had a number of variations.
