This was Audemars Piguet's first application of a perpetual calendar to Gerald Genta's legendary Royal Oak design. One of the touch points of this watch is although it is complicated it remains very thin, based on the extremely thin Jaeger-LeCoultre Cal.920 automatic movement, the perpetual mechanism is added as a layer or module under the 'Opaline' dial.
The current lot is a reference 25554ST and was produced in a very limited number of examples. As referenced in Audemars Piguet 20th Century Complicated Watches, p.231, of the 279 made, only 49 were in steel, 229 in yellow gold, 0 in two-tone, 1 in platinum, and 0 in pink gold. The current example, executed in steel is a low number so would have been amongst the first to be produced. This example would be a fantastic piece to have in any collection.
Veuillez noter que les index ont ete peints en noir ulterieurement. Please note that the hour markers have been painted black at some stage.
