According to an accompanying letter from 406 Gallery, Jennifer Dickerson identified the subject as David Armstrong, Challis Professor of Philosophy at the University of Sydney from 1964 to 1991. Armstrong was a highly respected philosopher who developed an international reputation and was made an Officer of the Order of Australia in 1993.
