APOLLO 13
FLOWN KAPTON FOIL.
2 segments of Kapton foil, approximately 40 x 28mm & 30 x 19mm, contained in clear plastic protective disc which is mounted to a provenance sheet.
The accompanying provenance document states: "The affixed fragment is an actual piece of Kapton material from the Apollo 13 Command Module #109 'Odyssey' which flew nearly 143 hours in space around the Moon and back to Earth on April 11-17, 1970. It was removed from the spacecraft after splashdown." The document also includes an image of the North American Rockwell Temporary Parts Removal Tag for the Kapton foil.
Kapton polymer film was developed by DuPont in the 1960s, and has been used in printed circuits as well as insulation for satellites and spacecraft. It remains stable under an extremely wide range of temperature conditions, and was used on the Lunar Modules and Command Modules on the Apollo lunar missions. The present pieces are larger than what is often found on the market.
