AKELEY "PANCAKE" CAMERA
35mm motion picture camera, New York, c.1915, metal body, 580 x 335 x 105, on Akeley wood and metal tripod, with Dallmeyer Series VI No 2 Dallon Telephoto lens.
The Akeley "Pancake" was created by naturalist, explorer, inventor Carl Ethan Akeley (1864-1926) in 1917 to be used specifically as a camera for travel, wildlife and newsreel production. The circular construction allowed for a 230 degree shutter angle, which was ideal for filming in low light and the camera's 400 foot film magazines could be changed in 15 seconds - in daylight. Most famously, the Akeley was one of the cameras used to capture footage of the May 6, 1937 Hindenburg disaster and Robert Flaherty used two Akeley cameras to shoot his classic 1922 documentary film Nanook of the North.
