CUSHING, HARVEY. 1869-1939.
From a Surgeon's Journal. Boston: Little, Brown, and Company, 1936.
8vo. Publisher's blue cloth, lettered in gilt, ruled device in blind to upper cover.
PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY CUSHING on front free endpaper: "Inscribed for Arthur H. Morse at the request of Bernard S. Brody and with the warm regards of Harvey Cushing, Dec. 25, 1936." Dr. Arthur H. Morse was on the obstetrics and gynecology faculty of Yale University's School of Medicine. Bernard H. Brody was a neurosurgeon who would come to be associated with frontal lobotomies at Connecticut's Fairfield Hospital, prior to the procedure falling into disrepute. Cushing's Journal documents his experiences during the war with a literary eye, but as the New York Times noted, "Gruesome and full of shadows as this journal is, it has its glorious lights in the things of beauty and the deeds of sacrifice and bravery that illumine it" (Finley, John, "Dr Cushing's Diary of Lights and Shadows in the War," May 24, 1936).
