Sammelband of three rare works on arithmetic:
1. SCHÖNBORN, BARTHOLOMÄUS. 1530-1589. Computus, vel calendarium astronomicum, continens praecipuarum partium temporis descriptions. Wittenberg: Johann Schwertel, 1567.
8vo (158 x 102 mm). Title page and final "calendarium generale" printed in red and black. 3 woodcut astronomical diagrams within the text. Contemporary blindstamped pigskin over wooden boards, panels with initial "MGH" dated "1572," two brass clasps and catch plates, spine in 4 compartments, ink lettered paper label in first, edges red.
Provenance: Vienna, Rossau, Order of Servants of Mary (armorial bookplate "Ex Bibliotheca Venerab. Conventus Viennensis in Rossaugia.") FIRST EDITION, of this very rare work on chronology. Schönborn was professor of mathematics at Wittenberg, where he later was to succeed Peucer as professor of medicine. VD 16, S 3361.
2. PEUCER, KASPAR. 1525-1602 Logistice astronomica Hexacontadon. Wittenberg: Rhaw, 1556. 8vo. 2 (of 5) folding plates. FIRST EDITION. Peucer, son in law of Philipp Melanchthon, was a mathematician, astronomer, diplomat, and author. He preceded Schönborn as professor of mathematics at Wittenberg. VD16 p 1999.
3. GEMMA, FRISIUS. 1508-1555. Arithmeticae practicae methodus facilis. Leipzig: J. Rambau, 1558. 8vo. Woodcut title vignette. Early edition, of this rare Leipzig imprint of the popular arithmetic book of the 16th century. "It combined the older science of numbers with the commercial arithmetic of the Italian writers" (Smith). Smith, Rara 204; VD 16, G 1120.
