NINE IRON TSUBA

Momoyama (1573-1615) and Edo period (1615-1868), 16th to 17th century
All iron; the first almost circular with openwork tomoe designs, Higo Province, Kamiyoshi type, with gold inlay of karakusa arabesques; the second circular with openwork tomoe designs, Heianjō zōgan type with brass inlay of tessen (clematis) and tendrils; the third six-lobed, pierced with a chōji (clove) and another motif, with brass inlay of tessen and tendrils; the fourth circular, pierced with a matsukawabishi (pine-bark lozenge) motif; the fifth cruciform, pierced with a kiri (paulownia) crest; the sixth 32-lobed, pierced with chasen (tea whisks) and habōki (feather dusters used at tea gatherings); the seventh circular, small, unusually thick, pierced with stylized yukibana (snowflakes) and chiseled with cherry blossoms; the eighth circular, possibly with a stylized kukurizaru doll design; the ninth oval, pierced with pine, bamboo, and prunus (9)
