SEVEN TSUBA

Momoyama (1573-1615) and Edo period (1615-1868), 16th to 18th century
All iron; the first rounded rectangular with a hammered-up rim, chiseled in relief and slight gold overlay depicting Benkei and Ushiwakamaru (Yoshitsune) fighting on the Gojo Bridge; the second oval, hammered and chiseled in relief with a Chinese landscape and pierced with two udenukiana openings, with signature Yamashiro no kuni Fushimi no jū Kaneie; the third circular, pierced and chiseled in relief and with gold inlay depicting chrysanthemum leaves and blossoms and a hat, signed Bushu no jū Masakata; the fourth circular, chiseled in relief with a leaf design and with gold dots; the fifth ovoid, chiseled in relief and with gold inlay of a shishi (Chinese mythical lion) and bells on strings; the sixth ovoid, unusually thick, inlaid in copper with a hō-ō bird roundel and pierced with two udenukiana; the seventh circular, formed as four lenticular shapes surrounding the seppadai and pierced with four cherry-blossom motifs; each with an unmarked wood storage box (14)
