SHŌAMI SCHOOL OF AKITA

An Iron Tsuba
Edo period (1615-1868), 17th century
Circular with a hammered ground, pierced with two nata (handled hatchet) shapes, a crescent moon, a circular shape, and a hitsuana, the latter two openings lined with shakudō and silver, respectively, one nata blade inlaid in silver, the handle inlaid with striated copper, the moon inlaid in shakudō, and with an applied ropework shakudō rim; with a Hozon Tōsōgu (Sword Fitting Worthy of Preservation) certificate # 4003991 issued by the Nihon Bijutsu Tōken Hozon Kyōkai (Society for the Preservation of the Japanese Art Sword) dated January 17, 2014, and with a wood storage box inscribed on the reverse of the lid with an attestation by Satō Kanzan dated 1968 attributing the tsuba to the Akita Shōami school (2)
