HIGO PROVINCE

An Iron Tsuba
Edo period (1615-1868) period, 17th/early 18th century
Almost circular, the inside of the rim multi-lobed, the well-patinated iron worked in positive silhouette as a nagekiri (paulownia) mon (crest), with details in kebori (hairline chiseling); with a Hozon Tōsōgu (Sword Fitting Worthy of Preservation) certificate # 461754 issued by the Nihon Bijutsu Tōken Hozon Kyōkai (Society for the Preservation of the Japanese Art Sword) dated November 10, 2010, and with a wood storage box (2)

Footnotes

The so-called nagekiri (literally, "tossed" or "thrown" paulownia) refers to a simplified and asymmetrical version of the standard paulownia-crest motif, preferred by Higo-Province artists of the Hayashi Matashichi and Nishigaki Kanshirō lineages.
