A Shakudō Tsuba
Edo period (1615-1868), 17th/18th century
Almost circular, with an applied gold nekogaki (striated) rim, the ground punched with fine circumferential nanako granulation, chiseled in relief and inlaid in gold, silver, and copper depicting the courtier Ono no Tōfū (Michikaze, 894-964), identifiable by his umbrella, watching a frog (not shown) persevering in its attempts to leap onto a willow branch; with a Hozon Tōsōgu (Sword Fitting Worthy of Preservation) certificate # 4014657 issued by the Nihon Bijutsu Tōken Hozon Kyōkai (Society for the Preservation of the Japanese Art Sword) dated February 22, 2019, and with a wood storage box (2)
