A 62-PLATE SUJI KABUTO

Muromachi period (1333-1573), 15th/16th century
The bowl constructed from 62 iron plates, lacquered russet brown with later re-lacquering, the iron mabizashi decorated in gold and silver maki-e lacquer with rock formations and peonies on a silver lacquer ground, the tehen with a chrysanthemum-form five-stage kanamono in copper or yamagane (unrefined copper), both elements original to the helmet, fitted with a six-lame iron shikoro lacquered black and laced in blue, the fukigaeshi formed as war fans, finished with a large brass kuwagata maedate
With a Hozon certificate certificate # 12042147 issued by the Kokusai Nihon Kachū Bugu Shinkō Kyōkai (International Society for the Promotion of Japanese Armor) attributing the helmet bowl to the mid-Muromachi period, with later alterations
