A BLACK-LACQUER NERIKAWA SUIT OF ARMOR WITH A HARAMAKI DŌ

Edo period (1615-1868), 19th century
The kawari kabuto of momonari (peach) form of lacquered leather with an iron visor, the wide five-lame shikoro laced in blue with orange and white highlights ending in fukigaeshi adorned with gilt-copper fittings, the iron menpō decorated in Negoro-style lacquer with a five-lame iron yodarekake lacquered black, the maedate formed as the Chinese character Hon, the cuirass of lacquered-leather scales laced in dark blue kebiki style, with purple-laced honkozane sode, the kote iron chainmail with black-lacquered leather forearm plates, matching haidate and suneate, applied with matching stenciled leather to the component parts
With a Kishō Tokubetsu Hozon (Rare Item Especially Worthy of Preservation) certificate # 12042148 issued by the Kokusai Nihon Kachū Bugu Shinkō Kyōkai (International Society for the Promotion of Japanese Armor)

Footnotes

The relatively light weight of this armor, and the fact that there are no tekko (back hand protectors) on the sleeves raises the possibility that it was specially made for a practitioner of naginata (halberd), or possibly for a woman.
