A BLACK-LACQUER SUIT OF ARMOR WITH AN IMPORTANT MYŌCHIN KABUTO

Edo period (1615-1868), 18th century
Laced in blue with orange and white highlights, comprising a russet-iron 62-plate ko-boshi kabuto, each plate with 27 finely forged hoshi (standing rivets) diminishing in size as the approach the crown, the bowl surmounted by a five-stage gilt, copper, and shakudō tehen kanamono, and with a five-lame shikoro ending in fukigaeshi lacquered with heraldic crests in gold hiramaki-e, the fukigaeshi and mabizashi with gilt fukurin carved with scrolling vines, with a gilt-metal kuwagata-dai decorated with scrolling vines and gold lacquered-leather kuwagata, the helmet signed on the interior rear Ōshū no jū Yamato Munetsugu; the ressei menpō with red-lacquer lips, silvered teeth, and a boar-bristle mustache and chin tuft, with a four-lame yodarekake; the nimai okegawa nuinobe dō finished with printed leather on the upper plates, shakudō ornamental rings, gyōyō, and seven sections of five-lame kusazuri; chūsode trimmed with shakudō fukurin along the top edge of the kanmuri ita; the sangu all applied with gilt-metal heraldic crests; shinogote; kawara haidate; shino suneate; kōgetsu of leather and boar's fur; with two storage boxes; no armor stand
