A RED-LACQUER SUIT OF ARMOR
Edo period (1615-1868), 17th/18th century
Lacquered red and gold and laced in orange and blue, comprising a tall eight-plate akoda-nari (melon-shaped) suji kabuto with a three-stage gilt tehen kanamono chiseled with scrolling vines on a nanako ground, the mabizashi decorated with a sun in gold hiramaki-e, the helmet fitted with a five-lame Hineno jikoro, with a gilt-metal maedate of a Buddhist incantation, and a gold-lacquer ushirodate of a rising sun; the ressei menpō with a removable nose plate, gilt-teeth and applied with a boar-bristle mustache and chin tuft, with a four-lame yodarekake; the yokohagi okegawa dō laced in hishi and kebiki styles and decorated on the front with sprays of confronted wisteria in gold and red hiramaki-e against a ground of textured red lacquer, the seven sections of five-lame kusazuri lacquered gold; the chūsode with tapered lames toward the bottom; chainmail kote with circular plates pierced with floral designs; lacquered-leather Iyo haidate lacquered gold; shino-suneate; one armor stand; one storage box
